HANNAH MILLER
"Janine's faith in my abilities promoted my independence of thought, and self-belief, which allowed me to take risks and write my thesis with confidence. Janine's guidance was invaluable to my success in Honours - for both the First Class Honours I received, as well as the confidence and knowledge I will bring to Masters, and hopefully, future research endeavours."
“Janine supervised me throughout my Honours year in Psychology. Despite finding writing a daunting and challenging task throughout undergraduate years of study, the Honours year was an overwhelmingly positive experience under Janine’s supervision. Janine ensured that her areas of expertise and interest were compatible with my needs as a student and novice researcher, and made an effort to understand and utilise my strengths. As a teacher, Janine was adamant that ownership and passion were key ingredients for success in formulating my thesis topic, and this proved to be exceptionally valuable. From the outset, Janine set high standards and expectations, whilst also emphasising that the process should be viewed as one focussed on learning. Over the course of the year, weekly face-to-face meetings provided motivation, support and enthusiasm to learn. Janine was very generous in setting aside time to meet, whilst being flexible in altering meetings as the need arose.
As my supervisor, Janine consistently fostered confidence in my judgement and ability to execute research and communicate my ideas through writing. In particular, Janine was very responsive to my ideas and goals, and she created a collaborative environment in which I felt my input was valuable. Janine was also extremely clear in her communication and ensured a realistic timeframe in order to minimise stress. When faced with setbacks, I was particularly thankful for proactive and committed way Janine helped me to overcome these obstacles. All advice and feedback was constructive and solution-focused, which allowed me to quickly address any weaknesses and progress in my knowledge and skills. Janine’s advice encompassed more than just academic knowledge, as she brought her experiences working in clinical research to our weekly sessions. In particular, Janine offered precise strategies about how best to conduct interviews with my research population and maximise the potential of my research.
As a crucial hurdle to progressing further in my career. I would highly recommend Janine to those wanting to undertake a career in Psychology, and am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with her.”
